I'm pretty much guaranteed to miss a detail if I don't let something sit for a bit before publishing it or emailing it off for someone else to catch. It's embarrassing in scenario number two. However, easily corrected if it's on my blog and, if it's for a newspaper or magazine, I've got an editor there to cover me. I'm much better at editing others but need distance to edit myself.

How is that for going off topic? Eh, insomnia does strange things to a person. Hope you're sleeping soundly. At almost 4am with a busy day ahead, I'm screwed.Reginahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09024832959937205245noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6062248790514053091.post-14417433090401027582009-07-18T23:09:08.429-04:002009-07-18T23:09:08.429-04:00and i see where i overstated my case about "r...and i see where i overstated my case about "racism insinuating itself" into rowling's universe. i need an editor. always will. ;-)Jeff Aukerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13040330884223626237noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6062248790514053091.post-92154230820872141732009-07-18T22:40:41.612-04:002009-07-18T22:40:41.612-04:00your exceptions make my point, at least the point ...your exceptions make my point, at least the point i was hoping to make. you are right --- rowling's world is crafted to be nearly post-race, with explicit descriptions of hair and skin and ethnicities...that don't matter a damn to the plot. (insert applause) and the WWII analogy is spot on. what i was after is the craft by which rowling recreates the twisted *logic* of racism as riddle descends into voldemort. the sociopath is easy to recreate...hates him/herself wants them and all others around them dead. the extreme racist..or [x]-ist wants to live, takes pride in who he or she is, but has somehow convinced themselves that there is a class of others that does not deserve the same right, is less than human, is not deserving of the basic notion of dignity. stripped of dignity, the "other" can be killed like an ant without cognitive dissonance. it is no less fucked up a mindset than the sociopath who hates everyone, but there is something different about those who hate only certain people.

what intrigues me about rowling is how well she traces the step by step route that riddle takes from self pride to excluding a whole class of people from being worthy of respect, dignity, and life. I don't think the Potter books revolve around racism as a concept, but I think they brilliantly recreate and illuminate the false assumptions that racists -- or any other -ists -- have to foolishly embrace to come to the conclusion that dignity is not a fundamental human value. dignity is sui generis. There really isn't racism per se in the series. There is a war based on blood purity. However, it seems that white, Asian and black wizards get on in the wizarding world just fine ;) That's not to say that the pure blood feud isn't horrible. It's an allegory for WWII, but racism it's not. I've seen a few minority faces in Slytherin.

However, I'm sure with further installments of the story (fan fiction and what-not) racial conflict might come up.

Granted there are some who disagree and have written essays on it: http://www.racewire.org/archives/2009/07/your_racewire_racial_justice_v_1.html

I just the wizard world seems to be a fairly fair place as long as your human and magical. Being a half-blood is when you're screwed.

But, speaking of Harry Potter, I managed to find Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix on HBO On Demand, and I've only seen it once in 3-D. Let me get to it. I love it when they're on the train back to school ;)Reginahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09024832959937205245noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6062248790514053091.post-24440468790233346392009-06-25T10:31:32.923-04:002009-06-25T10:31:32.923-04:00Inspirational, as always.Inspirational, as always.Hollyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05466969772715355744noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6062248790514053091.post-59057162071959049632009-05-09T20:50:00.000-04:002009-05-09T20:50:00.000-04:00they is what they is and that's all that's they is...they is what they is and that's all that's they is...

and stuff.

and cheers back to ya.Jeff Aukerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13040330884223626237noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6062248790514053091.post-84168813967386512252009-05-09T20:02:00.000-04:002009-05-09T20:02:00.000-04:00your tags on this blog are the best tags on a blog...your tags on this blog are the best tags on a blog ever.

three cheers for slow days.anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09706571240996201351noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6062248790514053091.post-49011082992772852292009-04-22T23:48:00.000-04:002009-04-22T23:48:00.000-04:0012 and 20 regina should be damn proud to learn tha...12 and 20 regina should be damn proud to learn that they have the seeds of [some number deleted] regina in them. enjoy the walks. i'm learning to...Jeff Aukerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13040330884223626237noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6062248790514053091.post-17456868740921893712009-04-22T13:36:00.000-04:002009-04-22T13:36:00.000-04:00I think the bottom line to all of this is you real...I think the bottom line to all of this is you really can't take it too seriously. There are, I'm sure, some overarching themes, theories and cycles, I'll never pick up on during my lifetime. I've just come to the conclusion that those who think they've discovered the Right Way to be a combination of scary, arrogant and just plain intolerable. That's the case on both sides of the conservative vs. liberal maze.

After a few unexpected twists and turns in my own life, mostly the unexpected loss of my parents so early, I just can't get too bothered by the chatter. I prefer to take pleasure in a great meal, a walk in a fragrant park on a sunny day and the laughter of a good friend. The rest of this stuff is really just interference.

I think the 12 to 20 year old versions of me might be disappointed, but they've got no clue what's in their future. I do and I'm glad to have made it through it all still happy and, mostly, sane ;)Reginahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09024832959937205245noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6062248790514053091.post-71470419145534022102009-04-21T07:49:00.000-04:002009-04-21T07:49:00.000-04:00the love is noted and appreciated. my ability to s...the love is noted and appreciated. my ability to sustain a metaphor is...not strong. will work on that...promise. enjoy the summery flavors of the city by the bay...Jeff Aukerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13040330884223626237noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6062248790514053091.post-77334286676064209032009-04-21T00:34:00.000-04:002009-04-21T00:34:00.000-04:00You know there is nothing but love coming to you f...You know there is nothing but love coming to you from an old friend, but a bit of what I hope is seen as constructive criticism here.

I can tell this is leading to an insightful realization or discovery. However, there is a beauty to being able to follow something this short without confusion. You KNOW that between UCLA's philosophy department, English department, German and Latin departments; law school; and international studies abroad, I've dealt with complex. I had a bit of trouble following.

It gets me to a wonderful place, but it's a zig-zag of imagery and thoughts clash rather than compliment (and I understand the clash is what brings up the discovery).
